How are Marketers Priming You to Part With Your Money?

How are marketers priming you to part with your money?  In so many ways you’ll never even suspect. Priming is so obvious that it seems normal but we are getting primed all the time for the experiences we have in stores, computers, mobile devices and print ads. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry that leans heavily on priming consumers for reducing resistance and targeting certain products. Learn more from the articles we have below.

How are Marketers Priming You to Part With Your Money?

“Priming” Can Play Us Like Puppets

Quick: When’s the last time you bought flowers at a grocery store? Never? Yet when you walk through the door at most grocery chains, what’s the first thing you see? Here’s what’s right inside the door at Whole Foods:

How are marketers priming you?

…These are grocery stores, people are there to buy food. Why would they lead off with a fringe product that 99 percent of the shoppers probably won’t even look at? It has to do with the subtle science of mind control known as priming.

Yes, it is entirely possible to manipulate people into certain behaviors without them knowing it. We’re not talking about subliminal suggestion, the disproven gimmick that claimed it could make people buy products by inserting hidden messages in movies. No, the real technique is priming, and it’s as sinister as a windowless white van at a playground.

What? How?

The idea behind the flowers is that, as we’ve touched on elsewhere, hitting you with a product that is highly perishable yet fresh will “prime” you into thinking of freshness, and that you will carry that “freshness” mindset with you all the way back to the discount meat case. It sounds like bullshit — humans don’t connect completely unrelated ideas like that, right? Yet it’s confirmed pretty much every time they test it.

Sometimes “priming” is as simple as finding that people will keep a room cleaner if it smells like disinfectant – that subtle reminder is enough to make people think, “This is a clean room, I should keep it clean.” But when you see how far they can take this, it gets weird.

Priming the Unconscious

The idea of subliminal influence has a mixed reputation among scientists because of a history of advertising hype and apparent fraud. In 1957, an ad man named James Vicary claimed to have increased sales of Coca-Cola and popcorn at a movie theater in Fort Lee, N.J., by secretly flashing the words “Eat popcorn” and “Drink Coke” during the film, too quickly to be consciously noticed. But advertisers and regulators doubted his story from the beginning, and in a 1962 interview, Mr. Vicary acknowledged that he had trumped up the findings to gain attention for his business.

Later studies of products promising subliminal improvement, for things like memory and self-esteem, found no effect.

Some scientists also caution against overstating the implications of the latest research on priming unconscious goals. The new research “doesn’t prove that consciousness never does anything,” wrote Roy Baumeister, a professor of psychology at Florida State University, in an e-mail message. “It’s rather like showing you can hot-wire a car to start the ignition without keys. That’s important and potentially useful information, but it doesn’t prove that keys don’t exist or that keys are useless.”

Yet he and most in the field now agree that the evidence for psychological hot-wiring has become overwhelming. In one 2004 experiment, psychologists led by Aaron Kay, then at Stanford University and now at the University of Waterloo, had students take part in a one-on-one investment game with another, unseen player.

Half the students played while sitting at a large table, at the other end of which was a briefcase and a black leather portfolio. These students were far stingier with their money than the others, who played in an identical room, but with a backpack on the table instead.

The mere presence of the briefcase, noticed but not consciously registered, generated business-related associations and expectations, the authors argue, leading the brain to run the most appropriate goal program: compete. The students had no sense of whether they had acted selfishly or generously.

I think these results are very interesting  How many of you can think of many sights, smells and sounds that could be used to “Prime” the ordinary consumer? How are marketers priming you to part with your money? What are your triggers?

Easy Ways to Create an Instant Connection with Someone

Easy ways to create an instant connection with someone include eye contact, mirroring and listening to them. Without these three basics you will not have much success getting others to connect and agree with you. We found a bit more information on these techniques on Changing Minds, Simon Hazeldine  shared his tips for master sales people who need to make instant connections.

Do you want to get people to say ‘yes’ to your presentations and proposals? Extensive psychological research demonstrates the importance of ‘liking’ in persuading people to say ‘Yes’.

Master salespeople are adept at utilising powerful psychological strategies to make people like them. Here are three highly effective strategies you can use:

  1. Flash at people! Don’t worry this is quite safe! Body language experts have noted that when people meet people who they know and like, they lift or ‘flash’ their eyebrows upwards for a fraction of a second when first making eye contact. As this movement occurs outside of people’s conscious attention it is often referred to as ‘the unconscious hello’. It sends a powerful message of liking and acceptance to the other person which they will usually reciprocate.
  2. When people like each other they unconsciously mirror each others body language. Psychologists call this “postural echoing”. A very fast and very effective way to encourage people to like you is to mirror their body language. They won’t notice what you are doing at a conscious level but the positive impact of mirroring occurs at a deep unconscious level.
  3. Be genuinely interested in the other person. It is human nature to be interested in what is important to us. When someone else is interested in what is important to us, we cannot help but like them! It is very rare for people to be truly listened to. When this happens people develop a deep bond with the person doing the listening. Say less and listen more, and people will like you for it.
In many situations it is easy to do these three simple techniques to create a connection with someone quickly and without really saying anything specific. Your body language will say more than words every time. Give them a try the next time you need to persuade an individual or a group to follow your suggestions or buy your products.

Let Me Introduce Propaganda to Covert Hypnosis

Let me introduce propaganda to covert hypnosis and see what happens…Ooops, I think they are very familiar with each other already. In fact propaganda takes covert hypnosis to a much wider audience. On Changing Minds. org the discussion shows that the qualities that make propaganda so powerful, also make covert hypnosis just as powerful. Let me introduce propaganda to covert hypnosis and show you what is possible.

Newspapers and magazines are loaded with propaganda and advertising is another form of covert hypnosis.

Propaganda is an evocative word that brings to mind images of dictatorships and wartime misinformation. Although not as widespread as conspiracy theorists might have us believe, it is still in use daily in virtually every country.”

The ideological goal

“The basic defining goal of propaganda is that it seeks to control what people believe – that is, the ideas they consider to be unquestionably true. Hence propaganda is about ideology, which may be political, religious, philosophical. In some senses, all ideologies use propaganda when they promote their ideas as being the only real truth and denigrate other belief systems as bad, evil or just plain wrong.”

The hidden quality

“Another defining quality of perfect propaganda is that it is hidden, such that the recipients perceive it and communications about it as a simple truth. The subject matter just becomes what is normal and the communicator of the message is not perceived as trying to persuade or manipulate.”

In brief, then, propaganda is covert persuasion of large groups of people.

“At the other end of the realization scale, if people perceive themselves as victims of manipulative machinations, then they will feel betrayed and hence rebel against the manipulator. This rebellion may be open or, if the manipulator has other power (such as military), then it may become subverted and covert.”

Basic conditions

“For propaganda to happen, there must be a person or persons in positions of power where they have significant control over mass-communication media. This can include presidents, governments and media moguls. At a smaller scale, it also includes company bosses, head teachers and parents.”

“The person in control must have a need either that a significant group of people believe something to be true or perceive something in some way.”

Many people fear the use of propaganda because they know the power it has to change the course of events. When propaganda is used for negative purposes it can lead to devastating consequences. However if a group of people can be convinced that something is beneficial and positive results occur then let me introduce propaganda to covert hypnosis and start motivating people and changing the future.

Language of Persuasion and Covert Hypnosis

There is a distinct language of persuasion and covert hypnosis that an individual must master in order to become really comfortable with any hypnosis technique. Today’s article found on Slaw.ca on how to close more clients using persuasion, discusses mirroring and other anchoring techniques that speak the language of persuasion and covert hypnosis with every single word.

What is mirroring and how do you do without someone knowing?

“In his book, Influence, The Psychology of Persuasion, Robert B. Cialdini, Ph.D. discusses many factors that affect how persuasive you can be with others. Cialdini was also one of the authors of Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive, co-authored by Noah J Goldstein and Steve J. Martin.”

“Lawyers can use these persuasive techniques to help them increase the percentage of inquiries or initial consultations that turn into paid client engagements.”

“People like people who are like themselves; they hire people that they know, like and trust. In your initial consultation, you need to build up the like and trust factors in order to increase the chances that the potential client will want to work with you by the end of the consultation.”

“In an earlier post, Who Are You Marketing To, I talked about clients being a reflection of you:”

“People do business with people they know, like and trust. Clients are attracted to people who, at least in some ways, resemble them. In order to trust someone, you must feel comfortable that the person you’re working with shares some of your values and goals. Identifying your individual values and what you stand for can help clarify the kinds of clients that you will work best with.”

“In other words, you can identify the kinds of clients you want to work with by understanding more about yourself. In the same way, expressing an understanding of who your clients or potential clients are and what their concerns are can help persuade clients to retain you. The authors of Yes! suggest that mirroring behavior plays upon the natural inclination to like those who are similar to you; reflecting the client’s words and body language can help you seal the deal.”

“I’ve talked about “speaking your clients’ language” before (most recently in the context of networking); instead of using legal jargon or words only lawyers use, use the words your clients use. Legalese and jargon create more distance between you and your audience.”

“If your goal is to demonstrate your expertise and show potential clients and referral sources that you understand their problems and can help them, you want them to feel like they know you and that you understand them and their problems.”

“Mirroring verbal language makes clients feel understood. It increases their positive feelings toward you and makes them more likely to decide to retain you to represent them. Matching the rate and volume at which you speak to your client and mirroring their body language can further reinforce those feelings of closeness and comfort, foster rapport and can also aid in your persuasiveness.”

“Don’t make sudden or drastic changes, but be cognizant of how the potential client speaks and their body language. Be careful not to mimic or copy the other person exactly or your efforts can backfire.”

“Mirroring may not work in situations where a client is anxious or overly excited – in that case, mirroring by repeating the client’s concerns back to them, making sure that they know they have been heard and understood, but consciously not mirroring their anxiety level or rate of speech may be more persuasive.”

“In those instances, you may be more persuasive by being more calm and reassuring, and you may even be able to get them to mirror you. When the potential client begins to mirror you, you’ll know you are well on your way to being in synch and signing a new client.”

There are so many ways to practice the art of mirroring and the more you practice of course, the sooner you will master it. Mirror with your family and friends. Try it out on people at work or when you go out. Practice it even for few seconds with a waitress or barber. You can practice the language of persuasion and covert hypnosis almost anywhere.

Incorporate Covert Hypnosis into Your Way of Thinking

To become a successful hypnotist you must incorporate covert hypnosis into your way of thinking. If you are able to do this successfully you will never worry about getting “caught” using covert hypnosis techniques. When you become confident and more natural at speaking with people and using the powerful techniques regularly you are able to fully incorporate covert hypnosis into your way of thinking and truly make a difference in your own life and the lives of others.

“A number of hypnotists newly venturing in to the arena of covert conversational hypnosis fear they will probably be caught utilizing their skills by their unwitting hypnotic subjects. This is an interesting fear to possess since it is to suggest that these hypnotists are doing something wrong or something bad, an issue that you intend to ‘get away with.’ Except this becoming very unhealthy attitude to possess towards what exactly perhaps one of essentially the most powerful vehicles for positive change and improvement there is always, it is also something of a self fulfilling prophecy.”

“Think of this, the unconscious system is highly perceptive, even when we aren t always competent to consciously access these perceptions. I am sure you know what it’s intend to see someone, even before you speak to them, and merely automatically receive a feeling about them. Maybe you’ll like them, perhaps you won’t. These feelings will seem totally unjustified, but they’ll be 100% real. If you did use covert hypnosis in an unethical manner, people would unconsciously proceeded to associate you with all the negative results of your hypnotic suggestions, and will just naturally begin to mistrust you. So, to be a matter both of ethics and of pragmatism, forever use covert and conversational hypnosis for good…”

“So anyway, now that we’ve that out of the way, lets think about this whole ‘getting caught’ thing from another angle. Perhaps can remember or at least imagine a time when one of your friends or perhaps a family member has been upset about something. You have it to talk to them, to console them, and then they will move to you and accusingly challenge just ‘you’re just attempting to make me feel better!’ Now obviously on reflection its as straightforward to think ‘well duh! Of course i really want you to feel good, whats wrong with that!”

“But in the moment, some of us accept the accusation for what it is, and abandon them alone for their sadness. As silly because this definitely is, it reveals to us a crucial factor when doing covert hypnosis: People hate being influenced. No matter whether you are seeking to persuade anyone to buy a car or just simply to feel good and be happy people as a rule hate knowing regarding this, frequently to their own detriment.”

Persuading people to live up to their potential and be happy is a very good thing.

“This, obviously, presents us with another ethical dilemma. Why influence people if they prefer not to be influenced? Well keep in mind this, every day we influence people, always. We communicate with people every single day of our own lives, and take a look at and move people to make better decisions, to feel full and satisfied, to become happier and recover from their very own problems. The truth is also, many people accidentally use covert hypnotic tactics without realizing the harmful outcome of what they are doing…

“So, given that we’ve laid the land techniques of only using covert hypnosis to be a ‘force for good’ and established that influence is known as a natural part of everyday life, a crucial skill which covert hypnosis simply means that you can master, lets get back to the stage that this short article: getting caught.

“Firstly, avoid making the common mistake of talking differently when doing covert hypnosis. Lots of people get the idea that as soon as you begin using covert hypnosis, your entire voice and physiology must change. This is certainly only a bit silly, because, really think about it, covert hypnosis is definitely an unconscious process, so naturally your unconscious need to accomplish almost all of the work.”

“When you are consciously inside your head going “now i use a presupposition…’ you interrupt the natural hypnotic flow, you commence to sound robotic and uninteresting, you be understood as you will be delivering a prepared speech and individuals immediately realize somethings up and stop absorbing your suggestions…. let the hypnotic patterns to flow automatically from a subconscious mind, then, once your listeners are really in trance, once they ve are in love with your natural and irresistible flow of smooth suggestions you can commence to gradually lower, and deepen your problem, and set a hypnotic trigger, an anchor, which can instantly send them back into trance after you apply it…”
