What Really Happens When You Use Covert Hypnosis?

covert hypnosis

Everyone wants to know what really happens when you use covert hypnosis. We see many demonstrations of hypnotic techniques in training courses and in the media but it is difficult to accept how easily you can control someones thoughts. I'd like to share this excerpt from Wikipedia.org which clearly describes what covert hypnosis is and how it is used.

What Really Happens When You Use Covert Hypnosis?

Covert hypnosis is the ability to subtly communicate with another person's unconscious mind without their noticing. As it often takes place in the course of a seemingly regular conversation, it is also known as conversational hypnosis or sleight of mouth.[1] The objective is to change the target’s behavior subconsciously so that the target believes that they changed their mind of their own volition. When performed successfully, the target is unaware that the practitioner has hypnotized them or that anything out of the ordinary happened.

Covert hypnosis is a phenomenon not too different from indirect hypnosis (as derived from Milton H. Erickson popularised as The Milton Model [2]) in style [2] but the defining feature is certainly the act of an individual subject becoming hypnotised and taking part in hypnotic phenomena without conscious effort/choice – covert hypnosis, like “Ericksonian Hypnosis”, “operates through covert and subtle means… to reach deeper levels of consciousness than are touched by the surface structure of language”;[3] it is the concept that an individual, ‘the hypnotist,’ can control another individual’s behavior via gaining rapport (co-operation of their attention – as without rapport covert hypnosis does not take place) [4] with the subject and then making suggestions, the meanings of which the subject isn't fully consciously aware.

Building rapport is a vital step if you want to use covert hypnosis effectively. Even if you know your subject very well you still need to get them to agree with you. To learn the techniques for that click here.

    Honest Look at Hypnosis Training

I enjoyed this Honest Look at Hypnosis Training. There is a lot to be learned about human behavior and not everyone who knows hypnosis techniques can become an expert hypnotist. My hat's off  to Nick K on Converstional Hypnosis Critic for bucking the trend and telling it like it is. Nick points out that there are many benefits from hypnosis training too, so it does make sense to learn as much as you can and be prepared to handle any situation, but that doesn't give you total control even after years of practice.

Honest Look at Hypnosis Trainingfree from morguefile.com

Learning hypnosis from an expert trainer can open your doors to a lot of things. You can apply it to your personal life and improve on your bad habits, you can use it in your career to help you deal with the stresses of work, and you can also go on hypnosis training during a seminar which should help you improve on your selling techniques. In fact, learning the hypnosis is considered highly beneficial for those involved in psychotherapy.

But does this mean that everyone who goes into hypnosis training will immediately become expert hypnotists themselves? Unfortunately, the answer is, NO, there are no guarantees that anyone who goes into hypnosis training will become experts. The only guarantee is that one will learn the technique that is all.

    Truth About Hypnosis Training

Hypnosis is tricky; it is not an exact science for one. So this means that it is subjected to the psyche of the user and that psyche can make a success out of it or a total failure. No one can just walk in, get the training, and go around hypnotising people. In fact, those who become experts in hypnosis would be the first to admit that they are successful only up to a certain degree. They cannot claim to know everything about it; neither can they train someone successfully all the time. The statistics on success is quite low and it can be disappointing for someone who has high expectations…

As often as I've seen and experienced the benefits of having good hypnosis training, I'm fully aware that there are scams and unreliable experts out there. So everyone should keep their wit's about them and make sure you take an honest look at hynosis training before opening up your wallet. What kind of training should you be looking for? Covert Persuasion Techniques For Dealing With Difficult People

        Covert Persuasion for Difficult People

Covert persuasion might just be the technique you're looking for.  Who doesn't need advice on how to deal with difficult people? Difficult people are everywhere and our society encourages demanding, rude behavior so many of them don't even think they are doing anything unusual.

Some people see it as being strong and confident but when you are on the receiving end of angry or rude behavior you do not see that person as strong and confident. In fact it is often the opposite. Dr Alan Zimmerman guest writer at Changing Minds.org (covert persuasion) shares some of his best advice on dealing with difficult people.  See if you can recognize the covert persuasion techniques used in the story below.

Covert Persuasion Techniques for Dealing with Difficult People

When I look at the history of mankind, I'm amazed at how far we've come in technology. It's awesome. Figuratively speaking, we've come millions of miles. When it comes to the history of human relations, however, we've hardly taken a step. The same problems that plagued people in ancient times are still with us today. People are still rude, selfish, insensitive, and difficult — some of the time.

In fact, one University of North Carolina survey found that 78% of the respondents think incivility has increased in the last decade. And every one of the respondents could cite examples of co-workers who had treated them disrespectfully. To some extent, the media likes to glamorize examples of poor human relations. Read bumper strips. You'll find lots of rude comments made by difficult people. I read one that said, "I like you because you remind me of when I was young and stupid!"

And watch the sitcoms. I remember one scene where an answering machine said, "I'm probably here. I'm just avoiding someone I don't like. Leave your name and number. If I don't call you back, it's you." Now I'll have to admit there have been times I would have liked to use such a message. I'm sure the same is true for you. The problem is it doesn't do any good. It doesn't work.

As today's Tip suggests, when you throw dirt, all you do is lose ground…Unfortunately, we're forced to work with difficult people. That's life. Even though we may not like certain people or the situation they put us in, there are some things we can do…

I've focused on this particular covert persuasion technique because it has been very useful to me…

FIND A POINT OF ENTRY. It's like the young minister who was assigned to a New England church. A bossy woman lived next to the church, a woman who acted as though she owned the place. In fact, whenever the minister wanted to get in the church, he had to ask her for the key.

The first time he met her, he introduced himself as the new minister. She became indignant and said, "Oh no you're not!"

In fact, she went around telling everyone that this new guy was too young and inexperienced. He didn't even look as if he had enough sense to come in from the rain. And his first sermon in that church, she told everyone, wasn't worth much.

The young man decided to look for his point of entry, to look for a way to win her over. So he went over to her house as she was busy baking cookies. He couldn't help but say how good they smelled.

"So you like the smell," she said rudely. With reluctance she gave him one. After he finished it, he commented, "That's wonderful!" So at his request she gave him another one.

"You don't mind asking for what you want, do you?" she asked. But then she pushed the whole plate of cookies within his reach.

"I hear you lost your boy when he was my age," the young man said. "You must have been lonely all these years."

The woman nodded. "I still make these cookies because he liked them." He said, "I like them, too." And then he was silent.

That started them off on a new relationship. The young minister said she became a cherished, lifelong friend. She would bring him into her kitchen, give him some advice, and feed him. Indeed, she showed him how to win over all the other folks in the congregation.

It's so easy to react to the behavior of difficult people. After all, it's difficult. It does hurt. We can judge people's methods, but we need to be very careful about judging their motives.

The way the priest waited for just the right opportunity to reach out to the woman and recognized that her difficult nature  was a result of her painful emotions is one of  many covert persuasion techniques for dealing with difficult people that you should definitely try to work on.  The covert persuasion technique used by the priest was so subtle you may not have realized it when you first read the story.  Imagine all that you could accomplish if you were to adopt covert persuasion techniques like those in your everyday life.  How would you use your new found powers of covert persuasion now?

How are Marketers Priming You to Part With Your Money?

Priming happens all the time.  How are marketers priming you to part with your money?  In so many ways you'll never even suspect. Priming is so obvious that it seems normal but we are getting primed all the time for the experiences we have in stores, computers, mobile devices and print ads. It's a multi-billion dollar industry that leans heavily on priming consumers for reducing resistance and targeting certain products. Learn more from the articles on priming we have below.

How are Marketers Priming You to Part With Your Money?

"Priming" Can Play Us Like Puppets

Quick: When's the last time you bought flowers at a grocery store? Never? Yet when you walk through the door at most grocery chains, what's the first thing you see? Here's what's right inside the door at Whole Foods:

              priming

…These are grocery stores, people are there to buy food. Why would they lead off with a fringe product that 99 percent of the shoppers probably won't even look at? It has to do with the subtle science of mind control known as priming.

Yes, it is entirely possible to manipulate people into certain behaviors without them knowing it. We're not talking about subliminal suggestion, the disproven gimmick that claimed it could make people buy products by inserting hidden messages in movies. No, the real technique is priming, and it's as sinister as a windowless white van at a playground.

          What? How?

The idea behind the flowers is that, as we've touched on elsewhere, hitting you with a product that is highly perishable yet fresh will "prime" you into thinking of freshness, and that you will carry that "freshness" mindset with you all the way back to the discount meat case. It sounds like bullshit — humans don't connect completely unrelated ideas like that, right? Yet it's confirmed pretty much every time they test it.

Sometimes "priming" is as simple as finding that people will keep a room cleaner if it smells like disinfectant – that subtle reminder is enough to make people think, "This is a clean room, I should keep it clean." But when you see how far they can take this, it gets weird.

More info on Mind control studies…

Here is Another Article From the New York Times, on Mind Control…

          Priming the Unconscious

The idea of subliminal influence has a mixed reputation among scientists because of a history of advertising hype and apparent fraud. In 1957, an ad man named James Vicary claimed to have increased sales of Coca-Cola and popcorn at a movie theater in Fort Lee, N.J., by secretly flashing the words “Eat popcorn” and “Drink Coke” during the film, too quickly to be consciously noticed. But advertisers and regulators doubted his story from the beginning, and in a 1962 interview, Mr. Vicary acknowledged that he had trumped up the findings to gain attention for his business.

Later studies of products promising subliminal improvement, for things like memory and self-esteem, found no effect.

Some scientists also caution against overstating the implications of the latest research on priming unconscious goals. The new research “doesn’t prove that consciousness never does anything,” wrote Roy Baumeister, a professor of psychology at Florida State University, in an e-mail message. “It’s rather like showing you can hot-wire a car to start the ignition without keys. That’s important and potentially useful information, but it doesn’t prove that keys don’t exist or that keys are useless.”

Yet he and most in the field now agree that the evidence for psychological hot-wiring has become overwhelming. In one 2004 experiment, psychologists led by Aaron Kay, then at Stanford University and now at the University of Waterloo, had students take part in a one-on-one investment game with another, unseen player.

Half the students played while sitting at a large table, at the other end of which was a briefcase and a black leather portfolio. These students were far stingier with their money than the others, who played in an identical room, but with a backpack on the table instead.

The mere presence of the briefcase, noticed but not consciously registered, generated business-related associations and expectations, the authors argue, leading the brain to run the most appropriate goal program: compete. The students had no sense of whether they had acted selfishly or generously.

I think these priming results are very interesting  How many of you can think of many sights, smells and sounds that could be used for priming an ordinary consumer? How are marketers priming you to part with your money? What are your triggers?  How will you protect yourself from priming now that you know about it?  How many times can you recognize now from your past where priming has taken place?  If you ran into this priming again, would it still affect you the same way now?
